Abstract of lecture

Endodontic treatment aims to prevent and/or promote the healing of periapical pathology with the least possible weakening of the dental tissue, from the pulp chamber opening to three-dimensional filling. There are several factors that make the root canal treatment a challenge. Classifying the complexity of endodontic treatment is one way to identify factors that may interfere with its success. The knowledge of these difficulties and the appropriate derivation of the treatment, constitute a substantial element for the quality assistance to the patient, and the final aim: preserving the teeth. Recent technological advances in endodontic treatment has lead to preserve teeth that were previously considered untreatable.When performing endodontic therapies, the clinicians must try to preserve as much as possible the initial anatomy of the root canals, perform a minim ally invasive intervention within the possibilities of each clinical case. The pericervical dentin, the dentin located in the critical zone, is the point of concentration of forces responsible for tooth fracture. Its excessive removal results in a weakening of the tooth root, since it is essential to transfer the occlusal load to the root. We must avoid the use of instruments that remove this irreplaceable critical cervical dentin, crucial to reduce the chances of a root fracture. This presentation aims to get a complete approach in the difficulties that can be found in daily clinical practice. The rational will go from the diagnosis, towards the properly choose of the material in order to preserve the tooth structure as much as possible. This conservative strategy is the rational to achieve a safe endodontic therapy with a good long-term prognosis.

Abstract of workshop

In this workshop i will discuss and compare the different types of NiTi files available on the market, from reciprocating, rotary, and the application of these files during the scouting, glidepath, and main instrumentation phases before obturation.

I will speak about Protaper Ultimate explaining the system, its application and the reason for its use and the reason for its choice when choosing an instrumentation system. I will contextualize the errors that exist in instrumentation and how we can correct and minimize them.

Graduated from the Faculty of Health Sciences, Fernando Pessoa University - Porto. (DDS) in 2005 PhD in endodontics, at FORP-USP, Brazil. Master in Endodontics from the International University of Catalonia - Barcelona (MSc) in 2010. Assistant Professor of Specialization in Endodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Lisbon. Invited Professor of the Master in Endodontics at the International University of Catalunya – Barcelona Postgraduate in Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry at the Complutense University of Madrid. Member of the European Society of Endodontics. President of the Portuguese Society of Endodontology. Exclusive practice in Endodontics, in Lisbon. Author of articles in national and international magazines.
