Abstract of lecture

The primary goal of endodontic therapy is the long-term retention of a functional tooth by preventing or treating apical periodontitis. However, there are many other factors that impact endodontic outcomes such as the quality of the restoration and the structural integrity of the tooth after root canal preparation.

Contemporary research efforts are currently directed to better understanding dentin behaviour and structure during aging and function. An alternative approach is to minimise structural changes during root canal therapy, which may result in a new strategy that can be labelled ‘minimally invasive endodontics’. This doesn’t mean that the objectives are different from the past: we still want to prevent apical periodontitis or successfully treat it.

Protaper Ultimate is one of the last rotary files introduced on the dental market and it perfectly incorporates this philosophy of preserving dentin where it is biomechanically needed and remove it where it is biologically necessary.

Thanks to its unique geometry preserving the dentinal structure while keeping efficacy in the apical dentin removal and a powerful heat treatment increasing the flexibility, this new rotary files offers high level performance in simple and complex anatomies.

This lecture will offer a complete overview of the most recent trends in canal shaping explaining features and advantages of the Protaper Ultimate shaping system.

Abstract of workshop

Participants will have the opportunity to observe a live demonstration by Dr Santarcangelo (Dr Minabres), followed by hands-on practice on plastic teeth to familiarize themselves with the ProTaper Ultimate Protocol, under the supervision of the instructor. Each participant will be provided with the necessary training kit for the seminar, which they may take with them for clinical use.

Curriculum Vitae

Born in Bari in 1973, he graduated from the University of Bari School of Medicine and Surgery in 1996. Trained in Endodontics by Dr. Arnaldo Castellucci’s Postgraduate course in Florence. Active member of the Italian Endodontic Society.

Speaker at numerous conferences and congresses in Italy and abroad. Speaker at the AAE (American Association of Endodontists) in the San Diego 2010 and San Antonio 2011 editions, invited speaker in the Hawaii edition 2013. Invited Lecturer at the Harvard University, Boston (USA). Adjunct professor in Endodontics at the degree course in dentistry and dental prosthetics at the University of Padua from 2011 to 2019. Professor at the Two years Postgraduate course of Endodontics in Madrid (Spain), University Rey Juan Carlos. Author of the chapter “ Complications during endodontic irrigation” of the Castellucci’s textbook “Endodontics”.( Edra editor). He maintains a clinical practice limited to endodontics in Bari, Italy.
